Its versatility makes it a favorite among essential oil enthusiasts.
Botanical Origin and Extraction Process
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an aromatic herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family, cultivated in various parts of the world, especially in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. The plant, with its bright green leaves and whitish flowers, is one of the most popular in Mediterranean cuisine and has been used for centuries for its aromatic characteristics.
doTERRA Basil Essential Oil is obtained through a steam distillation process from the fresh leaves of the plant. This method ensures the extraction of a high-quality essential oil that retains the complex chemical composition and characteristic aromatic profile of basil. The purity and potency of the oil are fundamental to ensure that every drop offers the desired experience, which is why doTERRA is committed to sustainable sourcing practices and rigorous testing.
Main Chemical Composition and Its Implications
The chemical profile of basil essential oil is complex and rich, with methyl chavicol (or estragole) being one of its main components, significantly contributing to its sweet and anise-like aroma. Other important components include linalool, eugenol, and 1,8-cineole, each adding different nuances to the oil's overall profile.
- Methyl chavicol (Estragole): Primarily responsible for the distinctive anise or tarragon aroma, it provides a sweet and warm note.
- Linalool: A monoterpene alcohol with a floral and woody aroma, known for its mild properties and contribution to aromatic balance.
- Eugenol: Present in smaller proportions, it adds a spicy and slightly pungent nuance to the aromatic profile.
- 1,8-Cineole: Also known as eucalyptol, it offers a fresh and minty aroma, characteristic of many essential oils with expectorant properties.
The synergy of these components gives basil oil its unique aromatic profile and wide range of applications. Variability in composition may depend on the plant's chemotype, growing conditions, and distillation method, highlighting the importance of strict quality control.
Aromatic Profile: An Herbaceous and Sweet Touch
Basil Essential Oil is characterized by a fresh, sweet, slightly spicy, and herbaceous aroma, with subtle anise and balsamic nuances. It is an aroma that is considered stimulating and clarifying, and is often used to create an environment that invites concentration and relaxation.
- Aromatic note: Medium to high.
- Intensity: Medium.
- Description: Herbaceous, sweet, spicy, fresh, anise-like.
- Complementary scents: Blends well with citrus oils like bergamot and lemon, as well as other herbal oils like rosemary and peppermint, and floral oils like lavender and geranium.
This aromatic profile makes it very adaptable, both for diffusion and for diluted topical applications, allowing for a rich and pleasant olfactory experience in different settings. It can be an excellent ally when seeking an aroma that encourages calm and mental clarity.

Suggested Usage
Basil Essential Oil can be used in various ways, adapting to your needs and preferences:
- Aromatic diffusion: Add 3-5 drops to your essential oil diffuser to freshen the environment, promote an atmosphere of concentration, or simply enjoy its herbaceous and sweet aroma.

Precautions and Safety Tips
Although Basil Essential Oil is natural, its use requires certain precautions to ensure a safe and beneficial experience.
- Sensitive skin: Always dilute with a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) before topical application to minimize the possibility of skin sensitivity. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin before widespread use.
- Internal use: Use only therapeutic-grade oils recognized as safe for consumption. Dosage should be minimal and preferably under the guidance of a professional or with knowledge of safe use guidelines.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Consult with a healthcare professional before using essential oils during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Children: Keep out of reach of children. For use in children, always dilute in a higher proportion and consult a specialist.
- Contact with eyes and mucous membranes: Avoid direct contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. In case of contact, rinse with vegetable oil (not water).
- Storage: Store in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, to preserve its potency and freshness.
Safety is paramount when using essential oils. If you have any medical condition or are taking medication, consult your doctor before incorporating essential oils into your routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between basil essential oil and fresh basil in cooking?
Basil essential oil is an extremely potent concentration of the plant's aromatic compounds. While fresh basil adds flavor and texture, essential oil, used in minimal amounts, provides a much more intense flavor and aroma. It should be used very sparingly in culinary applications; often a toothpick dipped in the oil is enough to flavor an entire dish.
Is it safe to use basil oil directly on the skin?
Due to its potency, it is highly recommended to dilute basil essential oil with a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil, jojoba, or almond) before applying it directly to the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. It is always advisable to perform a patch test on a small area before more extensive application.
Can basil oil be diffused in the presence of children or pets?
Yes, it is generally safe to diffuse basil oil in family environments, provided it is done in a well-ventilated area and in short sessions (e.g., 15-30 minutes). For pets and very young children, keep the diffuser out of their reach and ensure they have the option to leave the room if they dislike the aroma or if it becomes too intense. Always consult with a veterinarian for the use of essential oils around animals.
What other essential oils does basil blend well with?
Basil's herbaceous and sweet aroma blends exceptionally well with citrus oils like lemon, bergamot, and lime; with other herbal oils like peppermint, rosemary, and marjoram; and with floral oils like lavender and geranium. These combinations can create complex and beneficial aromatic blends for different purposes.

Anyone with chronic pain (spasms in particular) may find this helpful
I am on multiple medications as well as in pain management for chronic neck pain. The other night, NOTHING was helping. I was pushing my back into the corner of our box spring, laying flat on the floor and stretching to try and get rid of the spasm (AFTER taking all medications). After about 20 minutes of this, I opened my a-z essential oil book and it said to use Basil, Wintergreen and soothing blend. I mixed 2 drops of basil with 3 of wintergreen and 5 drops of coconut oil and rubbed it into the spasm as well as my neck. Within 60 seconds the pain was COMPLETELY gone. Within 5 minutes I was asleep. i use it almost every day and made my own blend in a small 2ml amber roller vial so I can put it on when I am not at home.
Ear infection for 3 year old. Great product
Love doterra products. I would only buy their products from them because you are guaranteed that they are pure. I purchased the basil oil for my 3 year olds ear infections. Every time she is sick she gets an ear infection. I put the oil on a cotton ball about two drops and lay it in her ear. Put tape over it and by the next morning the ear infection is gone. Now I'm not a doctor but simple stating what I use it for. Never put oil directly in the ear. I also googled dotera basil facts and was given tons of other things you can use it for. The product was sealed, delivered fast, and did everything it said it would. Would buy again.
Breast milk booster
I purchased this essential oil to help boost my breast milk supply, as it was recommended by friends. I was seeking a high quality, safe essential oil. After much research I landed on doTERRA. The oil is just what I was looking for. I used it in conjunction with doTERRA fennel essential oil, applying topically mixed with a carrier oil, as well as taking internally in a veggie cap. I experienced the results I was after, a boost in quality and quantity of breast milk. Since the oils are so concentrated, very little is needed, making the bottle stretch further than that of a generic brand. My only complaint is that I smelled like pizza! But who doesn't like pizza...
