Description
Botanical Origin of Ginger Essential Oil
doTERRA Ginger essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the rhizome of the Zingiber officinale plant, a perennial species native to Southeast Asia and widely cultivated in tropical regions. Known and valued since ancient times for its botanical properties, ginger has been a pillar in various cultures, including traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, as well as in gastronomy. Its cultivation now extends globally, with key producers in India, China, Indonesia, and Nigeria, where climatic conditions are optimal for its growth. The careful distillation process ensures the preservation of its volatile compounds, responsible for its characteristic aroma and attributes.
Main Chemical Composition that Distinguishes It
The aromatic richness and properties of Ginger essential oil lie in its complex chemical profile. The main compounds that define its essence include sesquiterpenes such as zingiberene, which is usually the most abundant component, and to a lesser extent ß-sesquiphellandrene and ar-curcumene. These compounds are responsible for the warm, spicy, and slightly woody aroma of ginger. The presence of other volatile compounds contributes to its olfactory profile and intrinsic properties, making this oil a versatile element in both aromatherapy and gourmet cooking.
Aromatic Profile of Ginger
Ginger essential oil is distinguished by a pungent, warm, spicy aroma, with earthy and sweet undertones. It is a fragrance often associated with comfort and energy, providing a feeling of warmth and well-being. Its aromatic complexity makes it an excellent addition to diffuser blends, whether to create a cozy atmosphere or to complement other oils in personalized synergies. It is an aroma that can evoke memories of festive seasons or exotic dishes, bringing a deep sensory dimension to any space.
Potential Uses of Ginger Oil in Aromatherapy
Ginger oil is valued in aromatherapy for a variety of applications that seek to promote overall balance and well-being:
- Warm and stimulating ambiance: Diffusing Ginger can help create a comforting and energizing atmosphere, ideal for study or work, or simply to enjoy a cozy home.
- Comforting massage: Diluted in a carrier oil, it can be used for localized massages, especially on the abdomen or extremities, for a feeling of relief and relaxation.
- Aromatic support: Its aroma may be helpful for individuals seeking a sense of calm or to mitigate occasional feelings of unease.
- Refreshing breeze: A few drops on a tissue or in a personal diffuser can serve as an aromatic refresher during travels or long days.
Suggested Use
doTERRA Ginger essential oil offers multiple application methods to integrate its properties into your daily routine:
- Aromatic diffusion: Add 3-5 drops to a diffuser of your choice to purify and invigorate the environment. It is particularly suitable for creating a warm atmosphere during colder months or to revitalize spaces.
- Topical application: Dilute 1-2 drops of Ginger oil with 10 drops of a carrier oil (such as doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil) and apply to the desired area. This may include the abdomen for a comforting massage or the wrists and pulse points for a personal aromatic experience. Always perform a patch test on a small skin area before general application to ensure no sensitivity.
- Internal use (with caution and guidance): Ginger oil is one of the oils that doTERRA classifies as suitable for internal use due to its CPTG purity. You can add one drop to a bottle of water, tea, or your favorite recipes for a spicy touch and to leverage its internal attributes. However, this use should always be under the supervision of a healthcare professional or with prior knowledge of recommended dosages and potential interactions.
Aromatic Synergies of Ginger
The warm and spicy aroma of Ginger blends beautifully with a variety of other essential oils, creating harmonious and balanced mixes. Some popular synergies that can enhance its properties and create unique aromatic experiences include:
- With citrus: Wild Orange, Lemon, or Grapefruit can add a fresh and vibrant note that complements Ginger's warmth, ideal for energizing diffusions.
- With spices: Cinnamon, Clove, or Cardamom intensify its spicy profile, creating deeply comforting and inviting blends.
- With woodies: Sandalwood or Cedarwood can provide an earthy and soft base, enriching the composition and anchoring the aroma of Ginger.
- With soft florals: Lavender or Roman Chamomile in small proportions can soften Ginger's character, creating a more relaxing and balanced environment.
Experimenting with different combinations allows for discovering new olfactory dimensions and adapting the use of Ginger to personal preferences and moods.
Important Precautions When Using Ginger Oil
Although doTERRA Ginger essential oil is of high quality, it is essential to follow certain precautions for safe and effective use:
- Skin sensitivity: Ginger can be irritating to sensitive skin, so it is always recommended to dilute it in a carrier oil before topical application. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions.
- Internal use: While doTERRA certifies Ginger for internal use, consult a healthcare professional before ingesting it, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions or are taking medication.
- Eye contact and sensitive areas: Avoid direct contact with eyes, the inside of the ears, and other sensitive areas of the body. In case of accidental contact, rinse with plenty of vegetable oil (not water).
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Pregnant or nursing women should consult their doctor before using essential oils.
- Keep out of reach of children: Store the oil in a safe, cool place, away from young children.
- Storage: Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place to preserve the oil's integrity and potency.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fresh ginger and ginger essential oil?
Fresh ginger contains gingerols and shogaols which give it its spicy flavor and benefits. The essential oil, obtained by steam distillation, concentrates volatile compounds like zingiberene, responsible for its aroma and some of its properties, but does not contain gingerols or shogaols in the same proportions. Their uses and applications also differ, with essential oil being more concentrated and intended for aromatherapy or, with great caution, certain very diluted culinary and topical uses.
Can Ginger oil be applied directly to the skin?
It is not recommended to apply Ginger oil directly to the skin undiluted, as it can cause irritation, especially on sensitive skin. It is essential to dilute it with a carrier oil like doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil in an appropriate ratio (e.g., 1-2 drops of Ginger per 10 drops of carrier oil) before topical application, always performing a patch test first.
Is it safe to ingest Ginger essential oil?
doTERRA classifies its Ginger oil as suitable for internal use due to its CPTG purity. However, the internal use of essential oils is a delicate matter requiring knowledge and caution. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional experienced in essential oils before ingesting it, especially if you have health conditions or are on medication. Generally, a very small amount is consumed (1 drop per 4 oz of liquid or in a veggie capsule).
How can I use Ginger oil to create a welcoming atmosphere?
To create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, you can add 3-5 drops of Ginger essential oil to an aromatherapy diffuser. Its spicy and comforting aroma is ideal for family gatherings, relaxation moments, or simply to infuse a feeling of home and comfort into any space.
What other oils does Ginger blend well with?
Ginger harmonizes excellently with citrus oils like Wild Orange and Lemon; with other spices like Cinnamon and Clove for more intense notes; or with woody oils like Sandalwood and Cedarwood to create deeper, more earthy blends. It can also be complemented with soft florals like Lavender to soften its potency.

First quality ginger oil.
Using this first quality ginger oil (best quality) along with a carrier oil to rub into my ankles which are swollen. I understand this will keep the blood flowing and help the swelling, so am trying. Just began using so will report back if it works.
Great especially for nausea
Great to add 1-2 drops to my EO teas. Before I'd feel a little nauseous. Now when I add the ginger....no longer a problem and the added flavor is great. I use a combo of EO for health reasons. Now that I'm drinking my teas consistently, I'm definitely seeing improvement in my health.
Healthy...smell GREAT.....
Love the do Terra oils. Very pure so whether I am taking them internally (including cooking with some), mixing with a massage oil, or just breathing in the scent I know I'm doing right by my body. Best essential oils I've ever tried. Love to add a couple drops of ginger while cooking veggies or soups.
High quality
Smells great you can tell that the quality of this oil is high. I use it in a diffuser and compared to other oils you can notice a difference.

Works great
I love doTERRA, all of the products are amazing. I have celiac, so I use then when I get nauseous. You can rub it on your belly or bottoms of feet or, you can even put a few drops of this in some veggie caps and take them.
Okay, but not great
Found the Vicks ointment helpful, but it doesn’t last as long as I hoped. Might try another brand next time.
Amazing Balm!
This balm worked wonders for my chest congestion during cold season. The eucalyptus and peppermint blend is so soothing and refreshing! Definitely recommend it!
