Petitgrain Essential Oil

Brand: doTERRA · SKU: doterra-petitgrain-oil

Description

Botanical Origin of Petitgrain

Petitgrain essential oil, from the doTERRA brand, is obtained from the leaves and young branches of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium ssp. amara), a robust tree native to Asia. Unlike Bitter Orange oil (from the fruit peel) or Neroli (from the flowers), Petitgrain extracts its essence from the green parts of the plant, through a steam distillation process. This method captures the aromatic complexity of the plant, resulting in an olfactory profile that evokes the freshness of a citrus grove.

The history of Petitgrain dates back centuries, traditionally valued for its botanical properties and its use in perfumery and cosmetics. doTERRA is committed to ethical and sustainable sourcing practices, ensuring that every drop of Petitgrain oil comes from responsible sources that not only benefit the producing communities but also guarantee the purity and potency of the essential oil.

Main Chemical Composition

The chemical profile of Petitgrain essential oil is notable for its richness in esters, alcohols, and monoterpenes, which contribute to its distinctive aroma and potential effects. The most prominent components include:

  • Linalyl acetate: An ester known for its fruity and floral aroma, associated with properties that contribute to a sense of calm and relaxation.

  • Linalool: A monoterpenic alcohol also found in lavender, providing floral notes and studied for its potential to support states of tranquility.

  • Alpha-terpineol: Another monoterpenic alcohol that contributes a fresh, woody nuance to the aroma, and is investigated for its potential influence on overall well-being.

  • Geraniol and Neryl acetate: Present in smaller concentrations, they add floral subtlety and sweetness to the aromatic profile, complementing the main compounds.

This synergistic combination of chemical constituents gives doTERRA Petitgrain a versatile aroma and a profile of benefits that make it a valued oil in various aromatherapy and personal care applications.

Aromatic Profile

doTERRA Petitgrain essential oil offers a complex aroma often described as:

  • Fresh: With a lively initial note reminiscent of freshly grated citrus peel, but with a soft sweetness.

  • Floral: An underlying nuance that evokes the delicacy of orange blossoms, though less intense than Neroli.

  • Herbaceous: A green, slightly woody, and earthy touch that gives it depth and balance.

  • Slightly bitter: A subtle note that provides complexity and prevents the aroma from being too sweet, characteristic of oils obtained from the bitter orange tree.

This aromatic profile makes it an excellent candidate for diffusion in the home, topical application as a natural perfume, or as a component in personalized blends that seek a balance between freshness, floral notes, and a slightly woody background.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Petitgrain, Neroli, and Bitter Orange?

This gives them distinct aromatic profiles and chemical components.

Can I use Petitgrain on children?

Yes, Petitgrain is considered gentle, but it should always be more diluted for children than for adults. Consult a pediatrician or experienced aromatherapist for safe and appropriate dilutions and applications for their age.

Happy

I have been using this oil at work for stress for the last week. I love the "sweet bell pepper smell." It makes me smile for sure.:) I was taken back when I first smelled it. I guess I was expecting a tree like scent but it reminds me of a bell pepper. I got it in the "Create your own set of 6" last summer because the name stuck out to me. Very affordable and free shipping. Love it!:)

Have loved Petitgrain for years - An unusual scent, excellent mixed with lavender.

The best for uplifting my mood!

A lot of the reviews here say that people don’t like Petitgrain because of the smell. Well, it may not smell the greatest, but when I rub it into my hands with a little bit of a carrier oil and take five deep inhalation, my mood quickly changes. I find Petitgrain to be both calming and uplifting. There are plenty of essential oils that don’t smell very good, and some of them don’t seem to do much, but this one is exceptional.

I like it.

Out of the bottle, this is intense and it wasn't what I expected, but I believe I will grow to love it. This oil appears to smell of the same scent family as elemi and nerolina. It pairs very well with orange, patchouli, and peppermint.

Very Calming

This EO was a new one for me - I bought this bc I was intrigued by its description. I find the scent to be similar to bergamot with a spicy/peppery edge that I have fallen in love with it! This oil has a calming & grounding effect to the emotions but it also seems to help with nasal stuffiness. I find that it blends with cinnamon very nicely in the diffuser. So glad a gave this one a try.

If you are getting this oil because it also comes from the bitter orange tree...

This is a very plant smell. I can almost smell the roots and soil and water and leaves when I put my nose to this I swear! Petitgrain is an essential oil that is extracted from the leaves and green twigs of the bitter orange tree. The flower blossoms of the bitter orange tree make another oil called Neroli which is a wonderrrrrful, fragrant, floral smell unlike any other. If you are getting this oil because it also comes from the bitter orange tree and you're expecting something similar to Neroli than you will not be happy with this scent.
