Origin and Botany

The Tonka bean (Dipteryx odorata) is the seed of a large, majestic tree, native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, especially abundant in Brazil, where it grows wild in the Amazon rainforest. The tree, which can reach up to 30 meters in height, produces small pink flowers that give way to fruits containing a single seed, the precious Tonka bean. These seeds are collected once they fall to the ground and dry. Traditionally, they undergo a curing process that involves soaking them in alcohol (such as rum) and then drying them, which enhances their distinctive aroma. The absolute is extracted by volatile solvents, capturing the rich and complex essence that is so highly prized.
