Description
Botanical Origin and the Essence of Bergamot
Young Living's Bergamot Essential Oil is obtained from the peel of the fruit of Citrus bergamia, a citrus fruit primarily cultivated in the sunny region of Calabria, Southern Italy. This tree, a hybrid between a lemon and a bitter orange, is recognized for its white flowers and its round, yellowish-green fruit. Cold pressing of the bergamot peel captures its distinctive essence, a fresh, vibrant, and lightly floral aroma with balsamic undertones.
Bergamot's history is intertwined with Mediterranean culture, where it has been valued not only for its fragrance but also for its properties. Its name is believed to come from the city of Bergamo, Italy, where its extensive use was first documented. Today, bergamot is a fundamental pillar in fine perfumery and aromatherapy, appreciated for its ability to positively influence the atmosphere and emotions.
Main Chemical Composition
The chemical profile of Bergamot Essential Oil is a complex combination of components that contribute to its unique aroma and uses. Among the most prominent constituents are:
- Limonene: A monoterpene that provides bright and fresh citrus notes, common in many citrus essential oils and known for its stimulating and cleansing properties.
- Linalyl Acetate: This ester is responsible for the soft, sweet floral notes characteristic of bergamot, contributing to its calming and relaxing effect.
- Linalool: A monoterpene alcohol that also offers pleasant floral qualities and is commonly associated with tranquilizing and harmonizing effects.
- Bergaptene (furocoumarin): It is important to note the presence of this furocoumarin, which can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight (phototoxic effect). Young Living's bergamot essential oil formulations are designed to minimize this risk, offering a variety of options with reduced or absent bergaptene content for safe use.
The synergy of these components gives bergamot its versatility and its ability to create an atmosphere of well-being.
Aromatic Profile
The aroma of Bergamot Essential Oil is extraordinarily complex and captivating. It is described as:
- Top note: Citrusy, fresh, and bright, with a sparkling touch that evokes the freshly peeled fruit.
- Middle note: Slightly floral and herbaceous, providing a subtle sweetness and depth that distinguishes it from other citrus fruits.
- Base note: A balsamic and slightly woody nuance that provides warmth and persistence, creating a sense of calm and balance.
This complex aromatic composition makes bergamot a popular choice for diffusers, natural perfume blends, and personal care products, where its fragrance can contribute to a harmonious environment.
Uses in Aromatherapy
In the realm of aromatherapy, Bergamot Essential Oil is valued for its positive influence on mood and general well-being:
- Promoting a relaxed environment: Its aroma can help create an atmosphere of serenity, ideal for moments of rest or to mitigate daily tensions.
- Support for occasional stress management: Inhaling bergamot may contribute to a feeling of calm, being useful in situations of mild stress.
- Mood upliftment: Its citrusy fragrance is believed to have an invigorating effect, helping to promote a positive outlook.
- Environmental purification: Like other citrus fruits, bergamot can be diffused to purify the air and neutralize unwanted odors, creating a more pleasant space.
- Skin care (diluted): In extremely diluted topical applications, its aroma is valued in cosmetic formulations for its fragrance. It is crucial to follow precautions due to its possible photosensitive nature.
How to Use
The versatility of Bergamot Essential Oil allows for various application methods, always respecting safety guidelines:
- Aromatic diffusion: Add 3-5 drops to your ESSENIQ ultrasonic diffuser to create a fresh and uplifting atmosphere in your home or office.
- Topical application (diluted): Mix 1 drop of bergamot with 10 ml of a quality carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut or jojoba) and apply to pulse points, temples, or behind the ears. Always perform a patch test on a small area of the skin.
- Direct inhalation: Place 1-2 drops on a tissue or in your palms, rub gently, and inhale deeply for a quick aromatic experience.
- Aromatic bath: Disperse 5-7 drops of bergamot in 15 ml of a dispersant (such as Epsom salts or an unscented bath gel) before adding to hot bath water for a relaxing moment.
- Room spray: Combine in a spray bottle with distilled water (and optionally, a little grain alcohol) for rooms, bedding, or curtains.
Synergies
Bergamot harmonizes well with a wide range of essential oils, creating blends that enhance its properties and aromatic complexities:
- With Citrus: Lemon, Sweet Orange, Grapefruit for a fruity and invigorating aroma.
- With Florals: Lavender, Geranium, Ylang Ylang for depth, sweetness, and potentially relaxing effects.
- With Resin and Woody: Frankincense, Sandalwood, Cedarwood to add a warm, earthy, and enveloping base.
- With Spices: Black Pepper, Ginger in very low proportions for an exotic and stimulating touch.
- With Mints: Peppermint (in small proportion) for a contrast
Precautions
To ensure safe and beneficial use of Bergamot Essential Oil, it is essential to follow these precautions:
- Photosensitivity: Bergamot oil (especially unrectified) can be photosensitive. This means it can increase skin sensitivity to UV sunlight, potentially causing sunburn or pigmentation if applied topically before sun exposure. Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 12-24 hours after topical application to exposed areas. Consider using bergaptene-free varieties if you will be in the sun.
- Dilution: Always dilute bergamot essential oil with a carrier oil before topical application to minimize the risk of skin irritation.
- Patch test: Perform a patch test on a small, discreet area of the skin before widespread use to detect potential sensitivities.
- Avoid contact with sensitive areas: Do not apply to eyes, inner ears, or mucous membranes.
- Internal use: The internal use of essential oils should be supervised by a qualified healthcare professional.
- Pregnancy and lactation: Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any pre-existing medical condition.
- Keep out of reach of children: Store in a cool, dark place, out of the reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply Bergamot Essential Oil directly to my skin?
Direct, undiluted application is not recommended. Bergamot can be photosensitive and cause irritation. It should always be diluted with a carrier oil (such as jojoba or fractionated coconut) before topical application, and sun exposure should be avoided on applied areas.
Is it safe to use bergamot on babies or young children?
The use of essential oils on babies and young children requires extra caution and very high dilutions. It is advisable to consult with a pediatrician or a certified aromatherapist before using any essential oil on children.
What is the difference between regular bergamot oil and bergaptene-free bergamot oil?
“Regular” (or cold-pressed) bergamot oil contains bergaptene, a furocoumarin that can increase skin sensitivity to the sun. “Bergaptene-free” (or FCF – Furocoumarin Free) bergamot oil has been processed to remove or significantly reduce this substance, making it suitable for topical applications that may be exposed to the sun, although caution is always recommended.
Does bergamot oil help with sleep?
While bergamot is known for its properties that can promote a relaxing environment and help calm the mind, which could indirectly contribute to better readiness for rest, it is not a direct sedative. Other oils like lavender or vetiver are traditionally more associated with promoting sleep.

Smell is so-so.
I love the scent of bergamot but this product isn’t as good as I had hoped. It is pleasant but I would not purchase again.
Fantastic Bergamot Oil!
I've tried many brands of bergamot essential oil, and Young Living's is by far the best. The scent is fresh and uplifting. Perfect for my diffuser!
Exactly what everyone needs
This is one of my favorite scents! Bergamot has many uses. I put it in liquid Castile soap and use it as dish soap, body wash and shampoo. I put it in a bottle which has a pump that creates foam. This means less waste when I shampoo. Because I’m not using chemicals on my hair, I no longer have to use conditioner. I get lots of compliments on how my hair smells, how shiny it is and how soft. I also use this oil as a roll on perfume.
Fabulous!
Bergamot smells SO GOOD and Revive is a reasonable price for a good essential oil.
Great for aromatherapy
I love using this oil in my roller blends. It has a calming and refreshing fragrance. A bit on the pricey side, though.
