Botanical Origin and the Magnificence of Cinnamomum zeylanicum
Cinnamon Bark essential oil is extracted from Cinnamomum zeylanicum, commonly known as the Ceylon cinnamon tree. This tree, native to Sri Lanka and southern India, is globally prized not only for its culinary uses but also for the aromatic and traditional properties of its bark. The process of obtaining the essential oil involves steam distilling the inner layer of the bark, a practice that concentrates the volatile compounds responsible for its distinctive warm, sweet, and spicy aroma. The specific botanical origin and extraction method are crucial for ensuring the quality and authenticity of the oil's aromatic and chemical profile.
Main Chemical Composition: The Science Behind the Aroma
The aromatic richness and characteristics of Cinnamon Bark essential oil are due to its complex chemical composition. Among its main components are:
- Cinnamaldehyde: This is the predominant compound and the primary contributor to the characteristic aroma and flavor of cinnamon. It also contributes to the oil's warming properties.
- Eugenol: Present in smaller amounts, this aromatic phenol adds spicy notes and is also found in oils like clove.
- Beta-caryophyllene: A sesquiterpene that may contribute to the aromatic complexity and certain properties of the oil.
These and other compounds work in synergy to give Cinnamon Bark essential oil its distinctive olfactory profile and its potential for use in aromatherapy.
Aromatic Profile: A Warm, Enveloping Embrace
The aroma of Cinnamon Bark essential oil is unmistakably warm, sweet, spicy, and slightly woody. It is a fragrance that is perceived as comforting and welcoming, capable of instantly transforming the atmosphere of any space. Its notes are deep and persistent, evoking feelings of home, winter, and festive traditions. This aromatic profile makes it an excellent aid for creating environments conducive to relaxation, concentration, or simply enjoying a sense of general well-being.
Aromatherapy Uses: Beyond the Aroma
In the field of aromatherapy, Cinnamon Bark essential oil is valued for its ability to positively influence mood and environment. It is associated with qualities for:
- Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere: Ideal for the home during colder months or anytime a sense of comfort is desired.
- Stimulating and vitalizing the senses: Its spicy aroma may help to revitalize and promote a feeling of energy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between cinnamon bark oil and cinnamon leaf oil?
Although both come from the same tree, cinnamon bark oil typically has a sweeter, warmer aroma with a higher proportion of cinnamaldehyde. In contrast, cinnamon leaf oil (or cassia) tends to be more herbaceous and spicy, with a slightly different chemical profile, though it also contains cinnamaldehyde and eugenol. Young Living specifies the bark origin for this product.
Can I apply Cinnamon Bark oil directly to the skin without dilution?
No, Cinnamon Bark essential oil is considered a "hot" oil and can cause irritation if applied directly without dilution. It is essential to always dilute it with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil) before any topical application, ideally in a 1:4 ratio or even more, depending on skin sensitivity.
Is it safe to use this essential oil around pets?
If you have pets, especially cats, caution is recommended when diffusing essential oils. Some species are very sensitive to certain compounds. It is advisable to diffuse in a well-ventilated area, keep pets out of the room initially, and observe any reactions. Consult a veterinarian if you have any concerns.
What is the best way to store Cinnamon Bark essential oil?
To preserve its potency and aroma, store the essential oil in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Ensure the cap is tightly closed to prevent oxidation and evaporation of the volatile compounds.

Smells so good
Cinnamon Bark …. Smells so good,,,, taste too but it’s hot! Helps to maintain sugar levels! At least I’ve been told that.
Essential oils
Love young living oils!
Smells amazing
I've been using this for aromatherapy and it's fantastic! Perfect for relaxation, love it!
Good quality and size for the price
I love that NOW Foods provide essential oils, great quality for diffusers, just a drop or two goes a long way, quickly filling a room with scent. The bottle size can last for a long period of time and came well sealed and packaged properly.
Lovely scent
Good quality and size for the price. I use around the home and also mixed in oil for oil pulling.
Very refreshing
I love this blend for my home. It's refreshing and energizing without being overpowering. Great value for the price!
Good but not what I expected
The scent is nice, but I was hoping for a stronger boldness. It's pleasant and calming, nonetheless.
Intense “bakery” cinnamon—awesome in a diffuser, not a skin oil
This NOW Cinnamon Cassia is the real deal: hot, sweet-spicy, and very strong. One drop perfumes a room. It’s perfect for a cozy “freshly baked” vibe or holiday blends. How I use it: 1 drop cassia + 4–5 drops sweet orange (or vanilla/cedarwood) in a 200–300 ml diffuser. Short sessions (20–30 min) are plenty. What I like: huge throw, consistent quality, great price for 30 ml, pairs beautifully with orange, clove, ginger, fir. Heads-up: This oil is rich in cinnamaldehyde and is a strong dermal irritant/sensitizer. I don’t put it on skin. If you must, keep it ≤0.05%—about 1 drop in 100–120 ml carrier. Never near face/mucosa. Safety you shouldn’t skip: external use only; avoid in pregnancy, around infants, and pets (especially cats). Diffuse lightly with ventilation. Can provoke headaches/asthma if overused. Do not ingest. Bottom line: If you want a bold, cheerful cinnamon for diffusing or holiday blends, this is excellent. For topical cinnamon, choose cinnamon leaf (far gentler) instead.
