Description
Botanical Origin and the Essence of Melissa
Melissa, scientifically known as Melissa officinalis, is a perennial herb from the mint family, native to the regions of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin. It is also known as 'Lemon Balm' due to its fresh, citrusy aroma with herbaceous undertones.
Young Living Melissa essential oil is obtained through a meticulous steam distillation process of the leaves and flowering tops of this plant, precisely at the optimal moment of its maturity. This method ensures the preservation of the aromatic and therapeutic compounds that distinguish this valuable oil. Its harvesting and distillation require great precision, as Melissa produces a relatively small quantity of oil, making it one of the most cherished and, often, most expensive essential oils.
In herbal tradition, Melissa has been revered for centuries for its comforting properties and its ability to inspire a sense of peace. From ancient Greece to the Middle Ages, it was used in a variety of preparations to promote emotional balance and provide general solace.
Main Chemical Composition
The chemical profile of Melissa essential oil is complex and rich, contributing to its unique aromatic characteristics and diverse uses. Among its main components are:
- Citral (Geranial and Neral): These aldehydes give Melissa its characteristic lemon scent. They are known for their refreshing properties.
- Beta-Caryophyllene: A sesquiterpene present that contributes to the oil's warm, slightly spicy notes.
- Germacrene D: Another sesquiterpene with a distinct aromatic profile that complements the blend.
- Citronellal: Present in smaller proportions, it adds a fresh, green nuance similar to citronella.
The synergy of these compounds defines Melissa's distinctive aroma, which is at once sweet, herbaceous, and citrusy, with a balsamic undertone.
Aromatic Profile
Melissa essential oil possesses a highly unique aroma that is immediately recognizable and greatly appreciated in aromatherapy. Its profile can be described as:
- Top Note: Fresh, clean, and distinctly citrusy, evoking the bright scent of lemon.
- Middle Note: Gently herbaceous, sweet, and floral, with balsamic touches that add depth.
- Persistence: A luminous and uplifting aroma that lingers subtly, leaving a feeling of calm and freshness in the environment.
This balance of notes makes it ideal for creating environments that invite relaxation and introspection. Its fragrance harmoniously integrates with other essential oils, enhancing blends aimed at emotional well-being.

Melissa essential oil is valued in aromatherapy for its ability to positively influence mood and atmosphere. The following applications are attributed to it:

- With Eucalyptus or Peppermint: In very small quantities and for specific uses, it can add a refreshing respiratory touch, although this is not its primary use.
Experimenting with these combinations can help discover the perfect scent for every moment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What differentiates Melissa from other citrus oils?
Although it shares citrus notes with oils like lemon or bergamot, Melissa has a more complex and sweet profile, with distinct herbaceous and balsamic undertones that make it unique and more subtly relaxing compared to the predominant acidity of other citrus oils.
Can I apply Melissa oil directly to the skin undiluted?
It is not recommended to apply Melissa essential oil directly to the skin undiluted, especially on extensive areas or for individuals with sensitive skin. Its high concentration can cause irritation. It is always advisable to dilute it with a carrier oil before topical application.
What is the best way to store Melissa essential oil?
To preserve the quality and potency of Ligh Melissa essential oil, store it in its original dark glass bottle, in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Ensure the cap is tightly closed to prevent oxidation.
Why is Melissa oil considered a premium oil?
Melissa oil is considered premium and high-value due to the low oil production per plant. A large amount of plant material is needed to obtain a small amount of essential oil, making it one of the most sought-after and exclusive oils in the world of aromatherapy.

HAPPY SMELLS GREAT!
Just browsing through and seen this, so why not? It gives off that good house smell. I recommend everyone get a little happy in your life :) Plus their logo looks cool!
Great for a gift!
I got it as a gift for a friend. I used a different brand in the past and helped me a lot, but it was too expensive, so I got this cheaper option after checking the reviews. My friend is happy, and she even shared it with her dad. I will get one for myself for when I need it.

Maravilloso para la piel
El aceite de melisa ha mejorado mucho la apariencia de mi piel. Lo uso diariamente y he visto grandes resultados.
A good, economical Melissa lemony herbal fragrance essential oil.
I had grown Melissa, in the past, in my garden, so I was familiar with the scent - somewhat like lemon verbena, yet, a bit more on the sharp citrusy side, more of the true lemon scent, yet there is a sizable component of fresh herbal green scent to it, being that the oil is extracted from the fresh leaves of the Melissa plant. Sheer Essence’s offering of this oil is much cheaper than other companies’ offerings of the same oil, and I find that this oil is fairly competitive, in quality and in price, so buyers might as well go with Sheer Essence’s Melissa oil, over a more expensive competitor’s product.
