Description
Botanical Origin
Young Living's Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Essential Oil comes from the peel of this citrus fruit, carefully cultivated to ensure its purity and potency. Grapefruit is a fascinating hybrid fruit, resulting from a cross between sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and pomelo (Citrus grandis or Citrus maxima), though the original grapefruit is generally considered to be Citrus paradisi.
The etymology of its English name, 'grapefruit', is due to the fruit growing in clusters, similar to grapes. This fragrant evergreen tree thrives in subtropical climates, requiring well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight to produce fruits with vibrant peels and juicy pulp.
Main Chemical Composition
The aromatic richness and properties of Grapefruit essential oil are due to its complex chemical composition, primarily dominated by:
- Limonene: Makes up the majority of the oil, often exceeding. This monoterpene is responsible for its characteristic fresh citrus aroma and is associated with uplifting and purifying effects in aromatherapy.
- Myrcene: Present in smaller proportions, it contributes earthy and green notes, and is attributed with relaxing properties.
- Alpha-pinene: Provides a fresh and resinous note, common in conifer oils, and is valued for its potential clarifying effects.
- Sabinene: Offers a spicy and fresh nuance, complementing the overall citrus profile.
The synergy of these components gives Grapefruit oil a vibrant olfactory profile and remarkable versatility for various emotional and environmental uses.
Aromatic Profile
Grapefruit essential oil exhibits an invigorating, sweet, and slightly bitter aroma, characteristic of the fresh fruit. It is an energetic and bright citrus scent, with a juicy and fruity undertone that can evoke a feeling of joy and lightness. In aromatherapy, it is considered a top note, meaning its fragrance is among the first to be perceived and usually dissipates more quickly. Its effervescent fragrance makes it a popular choice for diffusers, ambient blends, and formulations seeking an optimistic touch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Grapefruit oil safe to apply directly to the skin?
It is always recommended to dilute Grapefruit essential oil with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil) before applying it topically to the skin. This helps minimize the risk of skin sensitivity. Additionally, be aware of photosensitivity and avoid sun exposure after topical application.
Can I use Grapefruit essential oil to improve my mood?
Yes, its citrus aroma is known for its ability to uplift and energize the environment, which may contribute to a sense of well-being and optimism. Diffusing it is an excellent way to enjoy this benefit.
Why is it called 'Pomelo' if it looks like a grapefruit?
In Spanish, the term 'pomelo' is commonly used to refer to what is known as 'grapefruit' (Citrus paradisi) in English. There is some terminological confusion, as in some Spanish-speaking countries 'pomelo' may refer to Citrus maxima (a different and larger fruit), while 'toronja' is used for Citrus paradisi. Young Living uses 'Pomelo' for its essential oil of Citrus paradisi, whose peculiarity is that it grows in clusters, similar to grapes, hence the name 'grapefruit' in English.
What other oils blend well with Grapefruit?
The aroma of Grapefruit harmonizes very well with other citrus oils like Lemon and Orange, floral oils like Lavender and Geranium, and herbaceous oils like Peppermint or Rosemary, creating complex and pleasant aromatic blends for various purposes.

Tough nut to crack
I don't know what I was expecting, but the device is pushing the droplets to a height of like 15 cm and then it all falls on the ground and I DON'T KNOW exactly, but it seems like it doesn't make sense. It looks nice and fancy (like flames, right?) but if it really humidifies the air? I cannot say.
Works ok
It was a really good gift to give.
Good overall
It works well, but I wish the water capacity was larger for longer use without needing a refill.
Loved it when it was working
Looked fabulous in room setting. Colour and mist was superb. Mist function stopped working after 18 weeks, then light stopped working the following day. Really miss it but reluctant to purchase again. Very disappointed.
Good quality
This diffuser is really cool. You can have it in one color or can interchange between multiple colors. It is very decorative and has automatic shut off. I just love it ❤️
Looks nice and quiet
Perfect! Not noisy, looks good, nice design. The only downside is that the 200ml is a bit small. However it is not leaking and perfect for the price. I only can recommend!
